Fox Yao NO.001 Creation Notes: How the First Character Was Born

✍️ 百相工作室📅 2026-08-01⏱️ 10 min
As the inaugural work of Zhonghua Baixiang, what creative process did Fox Yao go through? From initial concept sketches to final illustration, this article completely records the birth of NO.001.

Why is the First Character a Fox?

After确定 the overall framework of Zhonghua Baixiang, the first question we faced was: which character to start with?

The candidate list was long: dragon, phoenix, qilin, Guan Gong, Li Bai... but ultimately we chose the fox.

Three reasons:

1. **Cultural depth** — The fox is an extremely complex image in Chinese culture, from the nine-tailed fox of Qingqiu in "Shan Hai Jing" to the fox spirits in "Liaozhai Zhiyi", from auspicious sign to seductress, the fox carries rich cultural implications

2. **Visual tension** — The fox form has strong design space, ears, tail, and eyes are all elements that can be developed

3. **Market validation** — Fox images have broad audience base in the designer toy market, from LinaBell to various fox IPs, proving the commercial potential of this image

Concept Phase: From 20 Sketches to 1 Direction

In the first two weeks, we drew over 20 fox concept sketches in different directions.

Some leaned toward realism, some toward chibi, some took a dark route, some a cute route. We even tried avant-garde directions like mechanical fox and cyber fox.

Ultimately, we chose a "New Chinese-style" direction:

Retain the fox's core identifying features (pointed ears, big eyes, fluffy tail)

Integrate traditional Chinese elements (cinnabar red main color, cloud pattern decoration, ancient-style clothing)

Process the form with modern designer toy geometric language

Naming: Why "Fox Yao" (Hu Yao)?

Determining the name was more difficult than the image.

Candidate names included: Fox Immortal, Nine-Tails, Qingqiu, Tushan, Fox Charm...

Ultimately we chose "Hu Yao" (Fox Yao).

The character "Yao" has multiple meanings:

Yao Raobeautiful and charming
Yao Zheshort-lived but brilliant
Tao Zhi Yao Yaofrom the "Book of Songs", describing lush and beautiful

This name both hints at the fox's charm and carries a touch of tragic aesthetics, fitting our positioning for this character — a spirit fox spanning a thousand years, witnessing countless human joys and sorrows.

Number NO.001, F7 heart-shaped face, cinnabar red main color.

Illustration Creation: 3 Weeks of Meticulous Crafting

After确定 the concept and naming, we entered the formal illustration creation phase.

Week 1: Line art. We tried 3 different poses — standing, sitting, dynamic jumping. Ultimately chose a half-side elegant pose that both shows the character's figure and retains mystery.

Week 2: Coloring. The cinnabar red main tone was set, but the color scheme was adjusted 5 times. The initial version was too bright red, appearing tacky; later added gold and ink accents to achieve the effect of "gorgeous but not tacky."

Week 3: Details and texture. Hair treatment, clothing texture, background atmosphere... every detail was repeatedly polished.

In the final illustration, Fox Yao wears a cinnabar red ancient-style robe, nine tails spread behind like flames, eyes with both charm and detachment.

Asset Expansion: From 1 Image to Complete IP

After the illustration was completed, we produced a complete asset pack for Fox Yao:

Three viewsfront, side, back, for 3D modeling and derivative development
Action library12 standard actions (standing, walking, jumping, greeting, etc.)
Emoji pack16 common expressions (happy, angry, shy, thinking, etc.)
Four-panel comics6 short stories showing character personality
Posters3 different style promotional posters
Atmosphere images2 scene-based atmosphere images (Qingqiu under moonlight, human marketplace)

These assets transformed Fox Yao from a static image into a complete IP applicable in multiple scenarios.

Conclusion

The creative process of Fox Yao NO.001 also established the standard workflow for the subsequent 479 characters of Zhonghua Baixiang:

Concept exploration → Naming positioning → Line art → Coloring → Detail polishing → Asset expansion

Each character takes an average of 2-3 weeks, but the first character, Fox Yao, took us a full 2 months.

Because it is not just a character, but the cornerstone of the entire Zhonghua Baixiang universe.
