Shan Hai Jing · Gonggong Striking the Mountain

Identity / Role

The raging-tide soul of Gonggong, the wave-turning spirit of the high-antiquity flood myth and a civilization that refused to yield. Positioned for cultural products of the spirit of resistance; its water vortex rotates, forming the "water and fire in balance" pair with Rong Yan.

Personality

Solitary, indignant, stubborn — will smash a mountain to argue a point he believes in. Over millennia he learned to hold the flood in his palm: angry, but never breaching.

Worldview Story

The "Huainanzi · Treatise on Astronomy" records that in former times Gonggong contended with Zhuanxu for the throne, and in rage struck Mount Buzhou: the heavenly pillar broke, the earth-cords snapped, the sky tilted northwest so sun, moon and stars shifted, and the earth fell short in the southeast so waters and silt drained there. That single collision produced the Chinese explanation for the lie of the land — why rivers run east, why stars slant west. Gong Lan is the spirit born of the flood at the broken mouth of Mount Buzhou. He remembers the roar when the contest for the throne was lost, remembers the sound of the mountain snapping, and remembers how that flood became river courses, becoming the reason rivers run east. Over thousands of years he learned to gather the deluge into his palm rather than let it break. Now he has become a youth figure holding back the waves, placed on desks to remind us that the will to resist need not destroy — it can also open a channel.

Character Profile

Cultural Origin

Gonggong striking Mount Buzhou appears in "Liezi · Tangwen" and "Huainanzi · Tianwenxun": "In ancient times, Gonggong fought Zhuanxu for the throne, and in anger struck Mount Buzhou — the heavenly pillar broke, the earth's bonds severed. The sky tilted northwest, so the sun, moon, and stars shifted; the earth sank southeast, so water and dust gathered there." Gonggong was originally a water god, later often portrayed as a fierce deity. This character restores the "water nourishes" aspect.

Craft & Commercialization

Recommended size 10-12cm. Water elements are the visual focus: recommend transparent blue gradient parts for water flows/ripples, with flowing hair styling. Clothing recommend water-pattern relief. Base can use layered transparent parts for ripple effect. Skin tone recommend cool tones to match the water god identity.

Licensing Fit

Suitable for beverage brands (mineral water/tea), water parks/cultural tourism sites, summer-themed events, environmental/water conservation public welfare partnerships, and beauty products (hydration lines). The water god image naturally aligns with "flow/nourish/purify" concepts.
