Worldview Story

From the strange beasts of the Shan Hai Jing to the caps and gowns of the dynasties, from the smoke and fire of seasonal customs to the ingenuity of the hundred crafts, and on to the mountain songs and dances of every people — Zhonghua Baixiang has walked all the way to its four hundredth. Each of these four hundred figures rests on real texts and living transmission: the Shan Hai Jing holds their origins, the dynasties hold their costume, the solar terms hold their observances, the crafts hold their procedures, the mountains and rivers hold their songs. Bai Xiang is the spirit born of that seal of reunion. He remembers the freshness when the first figure was brushed onto paper, remembers the gravity each time a volume was closed, remembers the grandeur of four hundred names set side by side, and remembers the stories now told to children as each figure is placed on a desk. Now he has become a child figure closing the scroll, placed at the center of the four hundred — four hundred phases complete, gathered into a single seal; one source for all hundred phases, endlessly renewed.
